[During the month of April 2004, MRFH ran a contest, created by Rich, to see if our readers could identify 30 screenshots. See how many you can guess, then read the answers and check out the winner of the contest below!] I’ve put together a little test for you all. On this page you will see a thirty screen captures from various movies, numbered conveniently 1 to 30; in most of the cases, just to make it a little harder, I’ve tried to get captures that don’t recognisably show any of the principals actors/actresses. Good luck!

Before I announce the winners an reveal the answers, I’d just like to thank all the people who entered –- it’s nice to know that there are at least a few people out there who read my article the first time around. So, thank you. Right, onto the answers… 1. Despite several spirited guesses at this being Hoth, from The Empire Strikes Back, it is in fact the Arctic Research station which is the setting for John Carpenter’s The Thing. 2. Several people correctly identified this as being from the opening sequences to Saving Private Ryan. 3. I thought this one was relatively easy, given that it actually includes 3 of the main actors in the actual shot. It is, of course, LA Confidential’s Guy Pearce and Kim Basinger getting jiggy on the floor, with Danny DiVito’s hand photographing them on the far left hand side of the screen. The cad. 4. This was included as something of an apology to the Mini-Mutants on our forum for our little April fools prank, and is of course, Brazil. 5. It took, a little time, but eventually everyone spotted the Star Baby on the left hand side of the picture, making it pretty obviously the end sequence from 2001:A Space Odyssey. 6. Some flashback goodness, in bonus black and white, from one of my favourite films, Memento. 7. I thought this would fox everyone, where in fact I think every entrant correctly recognised the legs of Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburn from the jump sequence in the original Matrix. 8. A little slice of classic cinema here, and a nice shot of the famous ‘Horses head in bed with the movie producer’ scene from The Godfather. If you got this one wrong, then I’m afraid I’m going to have to report you to the Don. 9. Shock! A principal character in a screenshot! And yet, still many of you weren’t able to correctly identify the flighty Mrs Peacock worried about poisoned brandy from Clue. 10. I couldn’t help myself. I had to include a shot of the delectable Kate Beckinsale and her black PVC from trashy vampire love story Underworld. No, really -– I did. 11. Lots of people identified the trademarked low ceilings of floor seven and a half from weird dark comedy Being John Malkovich. 12. A more obscure one, lot’s of people guessed at high school/college football films, but neglected to guess that it might be the spoofalicious Not Another Teen Movie. 13. Another film which is a firm favourite of mine, and another shot of a principal character – and yet, staggeringly few people correctly identified Juliette Lewis here from Strange Days. Shame on all of you. 14. Another cheeky little intro which made people miss a film they’ll all be kicking themselves over…this shot if from around the first 10 frames of classic 80’s action movie Aliens. 15. For some reason, lots of people though this was from Willow… but no, it’s not a castle, but instead the uber-gothically stylised church from the goth-tastic The Crow. 16. Jim ‘goes fishing’ here in one of the more inspired methods of attracting female attention from American Pie 2. 17. I was hoping this one might be harder. Trouble is, no matter how obscured his face is, everyone still recognised Ian McKellan and easily pegged this shot as being from the original X-men. 18. One of the harder ones here, mainly because of the confusing context. A lot of people were guessing Chinese and Japanese films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, when in fact its none other the Mei Ling from another John Carpenter film, Big Trouble In Little China. 19. Well, it’s Katie Holmes. I think this shot might have been included more for my own personal pleasure than out of any desire to make it difficult. Anyway, the appropriate film was, of course, Phone Booth. 20. Very few films centre around an aeroplane, so I wasn’t at all surprised that most of you correctly identified this as being The Jailbird from Con Air. 21. This was kind of unfair of me. A lot of people recognised the Necronomicon from the Evil Dead franchise, but not this shot specifically, which is from the introduction to Medieval Dead. 22. My most obscure one I thought. However, it seems I thought wrong, because quite a few of you easily identified this as being from the David Duchovny laugh-a-minute rollercoaster Evolution. 23. This was a very ‘if you’ve seen it, you’ll get it’ shot…not many films have a helicopter picking up a bus. One which does, however, is Swordfish. 24. Another pretty obvious one. Even without the horse the background alone might have given this away as being from Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow. 25. Lots of confused answers for this question, including a few guesses at Dark City – however, about half of your correctly remembered these characters as a group of Reavers from Blade II. 26. I thought this was the easiest of them all. I thought wrong. I will admit that it’s probably harder to identify out of context, but I thought everyone would get this as being one of the final scenes in The Terminator. 27. It seems that no matter how mediocre a film is, people will still remember it if it’s got top hats in; which seem to be the only explanation as to why everyone who entered correctly identified this shot as being from From Hell. 28. The woman’s head sticking out the elevator door was the real clue here that this lovely scene of mass destruction was from what is in my opion, the best Videogame-to-film adaptation, Resident Evil. 29. Tricky, tricky here. The car gave away the period, but only a couple of you picked out that this was from Gosford Park. 30. Added more for the sake of humour, and to let all the Farscape fan’s see Claudia Black in her 0.3 second role in the hilariously bad Queen of the Damned. And so, after the dust has settled, there must can be only one winner (and one runner up). After sifting through countless entries, I’m happy to announce that our winner is:
Congratulations Carl, and an email will be winging it’s way to you soon so you can claim your prize. The hotly contested runners up prize goes to Westley Bennet who managed 23 out of 30, and we’ll be in touch with you just as soon as Carl has picked his winners reward. To everyone else who entered, thanks for taking the time, and once our mass pre-order copies of Gigli show up in the Mutant Offices, we’ll no doubt have yet another chance for you to win bad films that we don’t want! |
