You allow the awkward pause in the car to reach a painful length before you reply. “You’re more than welcome to go off into the woods instead of the party, Mikey. Maybe that would be more fun for you.”
“It’d certainly be more for us!” Suzy says, turning to sneer at Michael. She and Paul laugh heartily; you hear Michael mutter something like “Don’t call me Mikey” as he slouches back.
“Here, guys,” you say as finally turn onto the main boulevard. “I need some gas and I’m supposed to pick up some ice and stuff. Maybe the gas station will be haunted.”
“Haunted houses are so dumb!” Suzy says as you pull into the station. “Who’d want to live in some old house anyway? If there ever were a real haunted house it should just be knocked down and burned. Ghosts are stupid, too.”
“No argument there, babe,” Paul says. “The only good scares are slashers and serial killers.”
You pull up to a pumping station and turn off the car. “Oh, let’s not get into a horror movie discussion, yeah? You can’t tell me ghosts aren’t cool villains.”
“Name one good ghost movie, then,” Paul retorts.
You smile. “Poltergeist, anyone?” You get out as groans and amused laughter fill the car. “You guys need anything?” you ask.
Everyone declines, so you pay for and put in half a tank and then walk into the convenience store. You’re trying to think of some more cool ghost movies as you pull open one of the doors and step inside.
“House on Haunted Hill!” you exclaim as you walk inside, enthused that you came up with another one. Movement and noise make your whip your head right towards the counter, where the attendant just jumped up to point a shotgun right at your head. He must’ve preferred the original, you think.
