Due to fan support, 20th Century Fox finally released PCU on DVD format in August 2003 and gave it a fairly decent "special edition" treatment. On the disc are both fullscreen and widescreen versions of the film, college-related menus, a "behind the scenes" featurette, the trailer, a music video for "Pump It Up", and two commentary tracks by director Hart Bochner and Jeremy Piven.

Check out 63 screencaps I made from the DVD on the Pictures page!

Trailer: Never having seen the PCU trailer before, this was quite a treat. It's a well-done, fast-cut piece that highlights some of the best jokes from the film. Time: 2 minutes 10 seconds.

Music Video: Mudhoney's "Pump It Up" is a so-so video, done in black and white with color clips from the film.

Featurette: This "Behind The Scenes" featurette is made in the style of a college promo film. It urges the watchers to attend PCU, and uses clips from the film and never before seen "interviews" with the characters. While it's obviously a fluffed-up trailer, the interviews provide a batch of new jokes, and thus is recommended to see. It's only about six minutes long.

Hart Bochner's Commentary: Hart gives a rather informative commentary, swerving from the studio details of "how this got made", to camera angles, to casting, and to sharing behind-the-scenes stories (like how Jeremy Piven almost punctured a lung during the flashback sequence). Hart's not an entertaining commentator, but he is very informative and still passionate about his first directorial experience, and he waxes about the things he would have loved to have included, and the things he was forced to cut. One interesting bit of trivia: the cast of PCU would play the cast of The Ref on Sunday softball games (both movies were being shot in Canada at the same time).

The best part of his commentary, of course, is a genuine shout-out to this website! Here's the quote (it's the last thing Hart says on the commentary track during the end credits): Hart Bochner: "[PCU is] still playing on Comedy Central... and there's still a website for it, so that's all good."

Jeremy Piven's Commentary: Piven's commentary is almost the polar oppostie of Bochner's: very entertaining but not as informative. Jeremy keeps coming back to two themes on this track. The first is the wonder that this movie became such a cult success, and the second is how extremely irked he was at director Bochner that he wasn't allowed to improvise (the "Don't be that guy" line is one of the few improvised lines in the film). It's pretty funny how restrained Piven gets while obviously wanting to lash out at his negative experience with Bochner, but other than that, it seems like he had a good time with the film.
