It really shouldn't come as a surprise at the lengths Hollywood will go in order to make more money than Croesus and Solomon put together, but even so the desire to make a movie that has already been made tends to boggle the brainmeats. If the movie sucked, then okay, give it another shot using the original as a template for what not to do. But attempting to make a better version of a movie that was already considered a classic is just asking to suffer by comparison.
They're superfluous, they're gratuitous and they reek of Hollywood's insatiable need to cash in on any franchise that does even a modest amount of business. Whether it be a 'reimagining' of a classic film that stands just fine on it's own, or a misguided attempt to make a better movie than the original, the remake is a staple of modern cinema... no matter how much we wish it wasn't.
And the winner is: Psycho '98!!!
Well, Vince Vaughn, it would appear that your flick has been distinguished as an exercise in extraneous futility. Take a bow!
