Movies, movies, movies. Yeah, they exist, I love them, yada yada yada. Now let's talk Battlestar Galactica.

The thing about TV series on DVD is that they can take over and eat your brain. Recently, we've been watching Battlestar Galactica. And even though it's one of the most popular shows on right now according to various magazines, I have to say I don't have a single girlfriend in my area who watches it. Some of their husbands do, but I don't see the husbands as much, and let's face it, I'm dying to have the "who's the last Cylon?" conversation with someone besides Duckie (especially since we're in agreement). So, I'm going to fangirl/babble in my proper forum, and get credit for writing an article at the same time. Neat trick, huh?

For reference, I am writing this article before the airing of The Hub. I have not read any internet spoilers, but there will be spoilers up to The Hub. Also, I have only watched each episode once, and while I think about it more than your average person, I am NOT up on every nuance of the show.

To be honest, I don't believe that the final Cylon can be that much of a shocker to most of us. Why? Well, there are a couple of rules that the reveal must follow, especially since they've made us wait this long. It can't be something casual like Cavil or Simon, where we met them that episode and then found out. It has to be someone recognizable. That means no Crewman Number 6. And although diehard fans might recognize someone like Zak Adama or the priestess who told Starbuck about her Special Destiny, the average viewer is not going to get a huge impact out of that. It also has to be someone believable, that doesn't require a lot of backbends and mental gymnastics to rationalize how this could possibly be the case.

Where is the Cylon? Well, there are three possibilities. One: he or she is on Battlestar Galactica. If this is the case - and they were on Galactica when the Dylan jam session happened - I assume that they know they are a Cylon and set the music off. Possibility two is that they are somewhere else in the fleet. In this case, they may or may not know they are a Cylon. And possibility number three is that the copy that was aboard the ship was already killed off.

Also, I am totally aware of the Entertainment Weekly Last Supper shot. However, I'm not going to use it as an argument because a.) producers lie, and b.) the actual interview leaves some loopholes that I'm not that into discussing. (But I'll dismiss all the non-known-Cylons in the picture anyway, so it doesn't matter.)

So who is the Cylon? Let's talk characters!

Candidate: Laura Roslin

Why she might be the Cylon: She's in a position of power, and it would be a shocker. Plus, her cancer would have interesting implications for the Cylon race in general. And don't forget that Opera House vision, which she shares with the Sixes and Eights.

Why she's not: I didn't bother to construct a huge argument for Roslin because I firmly believe she is NOT the last Cylon. It would be a cheat.

Candidate: William Adama

Why he might be the Cylon: Like Roslin, he's in a major position of power and he would be a big shocker. Plus, Leoben said "Adama's a Cylon." (Like I'm going to believe him?) But that's all I've got.

Why he's not: He's got two kids, which really blows the whole "first Cylon-human child" bit out of the water. It's a huge cheat, like with Roslin. He's the detective in the mystery - you can't turn around and have your detective be your villain.

Candidate: Kara "Starbuck" Thrace

Why she might be the Cylon: The whole "dead, been to Earth, and came back" arc. All the characters seem to think she's a Cylon.

Why she's not: Yeah, red herring anyone? The Cylons are way too keen to experiment on Kara, and we've also seen her memories of growing up. While Chief Tyrol and Sharon talked about memories of their childhoods, we never saw them. Plus, the drama for when Starbuck finds out Anders is a Cylon is just way too great.

Candidate: Lee "Apollo" Adama

Why he might be the Cylon: "Adama's a Cylon" could refer to more than one Adama, according to fan theories.

Why he's not. He's the one major character with a parent we actually see, who can remember him growing up. Let's face it - we all know Apollo isn't the Cylon; I just put him on here for completeness's sake. There is no way I can stretch this to make it make sense.

Plus, Lee is boring.

Candidate: Gaius Baltar

Why he might be the Cylon: He worships the Cylon god, to the point where he's acting like the Jesus figure, which is really rather disturbing. He can do the projection thingie, although that seems to be with Six's help. And he's had a hand in destroying humanity.

Why he's not: It would completely and utterly undermine his character by letting him off the hook. There are bad people in the world, and Baltar is a very well-written villain. Making him a Cylon is like saying, "no one human could be this bad!" Baltar must stay human, and I firmly believe he will.

Candidate: Karl "Helo" Agathon

Why he might be the Cylon: Before the episode where we found out Tigh impregnated Six, I'd say that Helo was one of the few guaranteed humans. But now that we know Tigh WAS capable of impregnating a Cylon (which could mean his blood is very much like a human's, meaning that the resultant baby will have the special Cylon/human blood), it takes that safety away from Helo. And that would be one heck of a shocker.

Why he's not: Like Baltar, making Helo a Cylon would undermine his character. Where Baltar shows us some of the worst in humanity, Helo shows us some of the best. The nobility and bravery of his marriage to Athena is completely negated by him being a Cylon.

Candidate: Lt. Felix Gaeta

Why he might be the Cylon: It's always the quiet ones. Let's count the reasons, shall we? He's in computers, and he's utterly brilliant at them, even though his specialty was genetics. Hmm, you say, genetics? Aren't the Cylons obsessed with reproduction? Yeah. He's been there from day one, in a position that allows him access to just about everything. He protected Baltar. He's helping find Earth in every way he can. He informed to the insurgency on New Caprica, which was led by three Cylons. His story line has been ramping up a bit more.

If you can't tell, Gaeta is my top pick for the Cylon.

Why he might not: Well, there are a couple of other candidates who are very likely. Gaeta might be too obvious, but maybe not. Plus, I've been thinking that with the numbers, the final Cylon should be female. But I can't make any of the women work. (There's also a fan and cast theory that Gaeta is gay. Which would be really, really interesting if it turned out that that was true and he WAS the Cylon. But personally, I just favor that the poor guy - because nothing good ever seems to happen to him - is a Cylon.)

Candidate: Anastasia Dualla (Dee)

Why she might be the Cylon: Like Gaeta, she's in a support position that allows her a lot of access to sensitive information. She married Lee Adama, giving her some measure of power. She's a minor character that is major enough for this to work. Plus, see my above note about it being a woman.

Why she's probably not: We have hardly seen her since she left Lee. If she was the Cylon, I'd expect her to start appearing a little more often. Instead, she's had very little screen time.

Candidate: Cally Tyrol

Why she might be the Cylon: My "the Cylon should be female to make the numbers a little more even" thing led me to even think of Cally. Again, especially since the Final Five can apparently knock up a Cylon. And no one's actually tested Nicky to see what kind of blood he has.

Why she's not: Cally was on Battlestar Galactica during Cylon! The Musical! Either she should have heard the music and been activated, or been the one to activate the music herself. The Ties That Bind clearly show that Cally had no clue about what was going on.

Candidate: Dr. Cottle

Why he might be the Cylon: I can't come up with a reason why he's not. Like Gaeta, he's active and frequently seen, a secondary character, and he's there.

Why he might not: I can't see anything compelling about him being the final Cylon. Doc Cottle seems like he's there more because you can't not have medical personnel than because he has a personality.

Candidate: Ellen Tigh

Why she might be the Cylon: They sure set you up to think she was, didn't they? And it's never really been answered. Sure, Baltar tests her blood, but he also later insinuates he may have lied. She's the wife of the XO, and she's a she. It would be very interesting if she was a Cylon and she went against the programming that the Final Five seem to have to resist the Significant Seven by collaborating with the Seven in order to save her husband.

Why she might not be: Like Gaeta, I can't come up with a good reason at all. She's been appearing frequently (at least in Tigh's head), her death means nothing as there are other copies around of her (or if she's an aged Six, which is kind of just weird). The only thing that makes me think she's not a Cylon is because Tigh's storyline works better if she stays dead.

Candidate: Tom Zarek

Why he might be the Cylon: He's a "freedom fighter" who has been spreading dissent among the Colonies for years. He is a maverick, and after political power. He's in a sector most of the other Cylons aren't in (civilian), and was not on the Galactica at the time the music went off. It's possible - very possible.

Why he might not: For the same reasons as Baltar might not. Zarek's character has centered around him being a very "the ends justify the means" person. Again, this is a very human trait. I'm thinking that you need to leave the people with unsavory pasts as humans. But Zarek being a Cylon is more likely than Baltar being a Cylon.

Candidate: Billy Keikeya

Why he might be the Cylon: Okay, this one would be totally unexpected, and I have to admit that I get a kick out of the idea of Billy (who was pretty clueless on some more personal levels) rubbing his hands together and being the final Cylon. Come on, isn't that funny? But hey - it could happen. He was in a position of power and influence - the same position that is currently held by Cylon Tory, as it happens. It would be an excellent shocker, and not too easy to see coming. Also, it gives new meaning to Tigh's wisecrack about the fate of humanity being dependent on "those two" having kids as Billy awkwardly romanced Dee.

Why he might not: Like with Dee, if Billy was going to reappear in this prominence, it would make more sense for the writers to occasionally drop his name here and there. It wouldn't be hard to do, not given that he was the President's aide. But they haven't, which leads me to believe that Billy will stay dead.

As a side note, Dee should have stayed with Billy.

Candidate: Romo Lampkin

Why he might be the Cylon: He's warped, he's appeared at the right time, and he hallucinates a cat. He's getting into the workings of the civilian government and he's more than a little bonkers.

Why he's probably not: Not nearly enough shock value, and I just don't see it. I only put him on here because other people think it.

Candidate: One of the Viper pilots I haven't mentioned

Why they might be the Cylon: Why not? Plus, look at the other Final Fives. Tigh is in the officers. Tyrol is pivotal on the deck. Tory is high in the civilian government. Anders was instrumental in the New Caprica resistance. But the Viper pilots didn't have a representative. Of course, Anders became a Viper pilot, which shoots that right out of the water.

Why they probably aren't: The recognizably factor. A fan can tell them all apart - to a casual viewer, they pretty much blend together as a mass.

Conclusion: Well, I'm pretty convinced it's Gaeta that's the Cylon, with Tom Zarek as my second guess. Billy Keikeya is my long-shot, and Ellen Tigh is my "please no, she annoys me to no end" guess.

What do you think? Am I right? Or did I miss something obvious? Head to the Forums and discuss!
