Vampire Hunter D vs. Hellsing |
Vampire Hunter D: Significant male character is a dark-caped half-vampire wielding a ridiculously long sword. He has a talking face on his hand which can cast spells.
Hellsing: Significant male character is a luridly dressed full vampire wielding a ridiculously large handgun. He sometimes shapeshifts into many-eyed demon creatures.
Winner: Hellsing, but only because the talking hand is an automatic loss. We're not sure why floppy hat = vampire coolness in the anime continuum, but it never fails to amuse.
Vampire Hunter D: Significant female characters (in the original movie) include a haughty metal-bikini-wearing vampire aristocrat with angst ditto AND a scantily clad human whose hobbies include fainting and propositioning the hero.
Hellsing: Significant female characters include a confident, powerful, and completely clothed British aristocrat AND a miniskirted vampire chick with angst issues who sometimes wields large weapons.
Winner: Hellsing. At least the Police Girl never propositions Alucard.
Vampire Hunter D: Two movies, one with vastly improved animation over the other.
Hellsing: Short-lived television show with an inconclusively-resolved plot.
Winner: Vampire Hunter D. Hellsing really needed time to wrap up some trailing threads.
Vampire Hunter D: Main character is the son of Dracula and an unnamed human woman.
Hellsing: Main character appears to be the original Dracula, at least judging by his name and one or two remarks.
Winner: Tie. Vampire content producers need to get over Dracula now, especially considering no one's using the content or rules of the book any more. It's like writing a biography of Jesus that depicts him as dying of syphilis in Baltimore.
Vampire Hunter D: Vampire Hunter D feels guilt over his desire to drink blood and fights it constantly. Those who do otherwise are villains, unless you count the talking hand.
Hellsing: Alucard gleefully helps himself to whomever he is allowed, though this doesn't happen often. The Police Girl's attitude is very similar to D's.
Winner: Hellsing. Police Girl gets over it.
Vampire Hunter D: Takes place in a surreal fantasy/futuristic setting, with bizarre monsters and dreamlike backdrops.
Hellsing: Takes place in a more-or-less contemporary setting and revolves around a secret paramilitary organization.
Winner: D. Nobody who does as much collateral damage as Alucard could possibly be secret for long.
Vampire Hunter D: D seldom speaks, and many close-ups show his expressionless face and hair blowing in the wind. Even when in pain or danger, he seldom reacts in a visible way.
Hellsing: Alucard luridly trash-talks everyone he fights and a good number of those he doesn't. Many close-ups show him grinning widely behind his round-rimmed glasses.
Winner: Hellsing. Too many vampires act as if they need Zoloft as it is.
